What is Arbitrum?

Arbitrum is a Layer 2 (L2) scaling solution for Ethereum that leverages optimistic rollups to enhance speed, scalability, and cost-efficiency. It benefits from Ethereum’s robust security and full compatibility, while offering significantly higher throughput and lower fees by offloading most computation and data storage off-chain. The native token of the network, ARB, serves a governance role. The development team behind Arbitrum, Offchain Labs, has transitioned the protocol to a decentralized autonomous organization known as the Arbitrum DAO. Within this structure, holders of ARB tokens can vote on key proposals that influence protocol features, upgrades, fund distribution, and the selection of a Security Council. Arbitrum’s roadmap for 2023 outlines several ambitious goals. These include the launch of Orbit, a dedicated Layer 3 solution, and the introduction of Stylus, a tool enabling developers to build smart contracts using popular programming languages such as Rust and C++. The project also aims to expand its validator set to include more independent institutional validators, and to migrate its protocol fully to Layer 2 through Arbitrum One. On March 16, 2023, Arbitrum announced the long-anticipated airdrop of ARB tokens. This airdrop distributed 12.75% of the total token supply to early users and DAOs that had been actively building on the Arbitrum network. Eligibility and distribution were determined using a point-based system that assessed user activity up to the cutoff date of March 1, 2023. The token generation event officially took place on March 23, 2023.
