What is Avalanche?

Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain that serves as a platform for decentralized applications (dApps) and custom blockchain networks. Positioned as one of Ethereum’s main competitors, Avalanche aims to surpass Ethereum as the leading blockchain for smart contracts by offering significantly higher throughput—up to 6,500 transactions per second—without compromising scalability. This performance is enabled by Avalanche’s unique architecture. The network is composed of three separate blockchains: the X-Chain, C-Chain, and P-Chain. Each serves a specific purpose, diverging from the traditional approach of Bitcoin and Ethereum, where all nodes validate all transactions. In contrast, Avalanche assigns different consensus mechanisms to each chain based on its intended use case. Since the launch of its mainnet in 2020, Avalanche has been focused on building its own ecosystem of dApps and DeFi applications. Ethereum-based projects such as SushiSwap and TrueUSD have already integrated with the Avalanche network. The platform is also actively working to enhance interoperability with Ethereum, including through the development of cross-chain bridges.
