What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain that powers the cryptocurrency Ether (ETH) and supports smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). Proposed by Vitalik Buterin in a 2013 whitepaper, Ethereum was funded through a public crowdsale in 2014, raising $18.3 million in Bitcoin. Ether was sold at $0.311 during the ICO, with over 60 million ETH distributed. Based on today’s prices, early investors have seen an annualized return of over 270%, nearly quadrupling their investment each year. The Ethereum network officially launched on July 30, 2015, under the codename “Frontier.” It has since undergone several major upgrades, including Constantinople, Istanbul, Muir Glacier, Berlin, and London. Ethereum’s goal is to be a global platform for decentralized applications—software that runs without censorship, downtime, or third-party interference.
