What is Litecoin?

Litecoin (LTC) is a cryptocurrency designed to offer fast, secure, and low-cost payments by utilizing the unique capabilities of blockchain technology. While it’s based on the Bitcoin (BTC) protocol, Litecoin differs in several key aspects, including its hashing algorithm, hard cap, and block transaction times. One of its standout features is a block time of just 2.5 minutes, coupled with extremely low transaction fees—making it well-suited for microtransactions and point-of-sale payments. Litecoin was launched as an open-source project on GitHub on October 7, 2011, and its network went live just five days later, on October 13. Since then, it has grown rapidly in both usage and adoption by merchants and has consistently ranked among the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalization for much of its existence. The project was created by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, who envisioned Litecoin as a "lite version of Bitcoin"—sharing many of Bitcoin’s core characteristics, but designed to be faster and more efficient for everyday use.
