What is Optimism?

Optimism (OP) is a Layer 2 blockchain built on top of Ethereum. It leverages the security of the Ethereum mainnet while helping scale the Ethereum ecosystem through the use of optimistic rollups. This means transactions are recorded on Optimism in a trustless manner, but their final settlement and security are anchored on Ethereum. Optimism is one of the leading Ethereum scaling solutions, with over $500 million in total value locked (TVL). It supports 97 protocols, including major platforms like Synthetix (SNX), a derivatives exchange; Uniswap (UNI), a decentralized exchange; and Velodrome (VELO), an automated market maker (AMM). To get started with Optimism, users can add the network to MetaMask and bridge assets like ETH from Ethereum to the Optimism Layer 2. On May 31, 2022, Optimism launched its much-anticipated OP token through a community airdrop.
