What is Worldcoin?

The mission of the Worldcoin project is to build the world’s largest identity and financial network, functioning as a public utility and giving ownership to everyone. At the core of the Worldcoin system is World ID, a privacy-preserving global identity network. World ID allows users to verify their human identity online ("Proof of Personhood") while maintaining privacy through zero-knowledge proofs. To interact with the Worldcoin protocol, individuals must first download World App, the first wallet that supports World ID creation. To get a World ID Orb-verified, users visit a physical imaging device known as the Orb. Most Orbs are operated by independent local businesses known as Orb Operators. The Orb uses multispectral sensors to verify a person’s humanness and uniqueness. By default, all images are deleted on the device unless the user explicitly consents to Data Custody. Once verified, Orb-verified World ID holders are eligible to claim recurring grants of free WLD tokens. (Note: WLD tokens are not available in the United States. For details, refer to the Worldcoin Tokenomics section of the whitepaper.) This model has the potential to make WLD the most widely distributed digital currency in the world. The WLD token is a utility token with governance capabilities, enabling users to influence the future of the protocol. In addition to the traditional "one-token-one-vote" model, World ID introduces the possibility of "one-person-one-vote" mechanisms. These two models can also be combined to support new forms of decentralized governance. Following the launch, the Worldcoin Foundation will gather community proposals and collaborate with users to define how World ID and WLD should work together in governance. (See the whitepaper for more on governance and decentralization.) While the utility of WLD will ultimately be shaped by the community, several potential use cases exist beyond governance. For example, users might choose to use WLD tokens for actions within the World App or other wallet applications, for peer-to-peer payments, or to signal support for specific initiatives or causes. WLD is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, and user grants are distributed on Optimism Mainnet. As a result, most WLD transactions will likely occur on the Optimism network
